Flatware Finds: What Are Sugar Spoons and How Do You Use Them?
Like any good Southern woman, I love my initials and monogram. I have an EBay saved search for "Vintage SH Initials" and squeal when I get the alert on my phone that something has been listed.
One of my most recent purchases is this adorable Sugar Spoon with "SH" on the handle. (This one got a BIG squeal). I don't even use sugar in my coffee or tea but I have a soft spot in my heart for this piece.
Sugar spoons are basically a teaspoon with a deep bowl to serve granulated sugar. They are usually used with coffee and tea service. According to Wikipedia, you will often see Sugar Spoons in the shape of a Sea Shell and because of that, Sugar Spoons are also sometimes called a "Shell Spoon". You may also hear them referred to as a sugar shovel because they mimic that shape.
Here are two other examples:
Here is another engraved one (how great is the crest that outlines the initials?!?) that has the most darling shell design on the scoop portion of the spoon. I love all the details in this one. And, also note, it is coin silver…which you may remember from this post on the different types of silver!
I think these make the most lovely hostess gifts or “little happies” for friends. Include some delicious ground coffee or tea and maybe some sugar cubes and wrap them all up with a beautiful bow!
