What is the difference between Wicker and Rattan?
I was going to post something the other day on my Chairish shop and described the item as “rattan”. Then I stopped and said “wait, is this wicker.” Then I realized I didn’t really know the difference and I, incorrectly, use them two terms interchangeably.
I wanted to share what I learned from the ole Google machine because, you know, we can’ know everything.
Rattan - is the actual material used to make the product
Wicker - is the technique they use to weave materials to make the product
Yeah, been using that one WAY wrong.
To dig even deeper, the most common materials used to make natural wicker furniture is rush, willow and rattan. BUT, as we all know, wicker can be made with synthetic materials to add true durability. (Think synthetic outdoor furniture).
This bar cart is made of rattan.
This chair is wicker and made of rattan.
Now, vintage lovers, go off into this world and dazzle your loved ones with “Wow, look at the great deal I found on this WICKER RATTAN chair.”
